Answer a few simple questions about your home to help estimate a sum insured for your home and contents.
Choosing an appropriate sum insured can help reduce the risk of underinsurance if you need to repair or rebuild after a major insured event. Rebuild costs can vary significantly depending on factors such as building materials, labour costs, design complexity and changes to building regulations. If your insured amount is too low, you may face out of pocket costs if rebuilding costs exceed the amount insured.

You should consider choosing Apia Home and Contents Extra if:
Apia’s Home and Contents Extra policy includes:
All standard benefits of Apia Home & Contents Insurance.
Home and contents insurance covers both your home’s structure and the belongings inside it. Home insurance helps cover the building itself, such as walls, roof and fixed fixtures, while contents insurance covers items like furniture, appliances, clothing and personal valuables.
Apia Home and Contents Insurance allows you to combine both covers in one policy, or choose home‑only or contents‑only cover depending on your needs.
The cost of home and contents insurance varies based on your individual circumstances. Factors such as your home’s location, construction type, age, sum insured, chosen excess and optional covers can all influence the premium.
Because no two homes or households are the same, the most accurate way to understand the cost is to get a quote based on your personal details.
The amount of home insurance you need should reflect the full cost to rebuild your home, not its market value. Rebuild costs can vary depending on building materials, labour costs, design features and changes to building standards over time.
For contents insurance, you should consider how much it would cost to replace all your belongings new. If your home or contents are underinsured, you may not receive enough from a claim to fully repair or replace them, leaving you to cover the shortfall yourself.
If you own an apartment, the building itself is usually insured under a strata or body corporate policy. However, this insurance often doesn’t cover items inside your apartment or your personal belongings.
Contents insurance can help protect things like furniture, electronics and clothing. Some apartment owners may also choose home insurance to cover internal fixtures and fittings, depending on what the strata policy includes.
*If you receive more than one discount, we apply each in a predetermined order to the already discounted premium (usually before adding taxes and charges). The discounts we offer are subject to change.
