More Information
Everything else you will need to know.
In Australia, Medicare provides health care for citizens and permanent residents. By taking out private health insurance you can get more health care options, peace of mind and it may even help avoid tax.
Hospital & Extras
Hospital cover gives you access to private hospitals and choice of doctor, while Extras cover helps with the costs of services not normally covered by Medicare, such as dental and physiotherapy.
Lifetime health cover
Under Lifetime Health Cover (LHC), you'll pay a 2% loading on top of the normal premiums for each year you don't have hospital cover by July 1 following your 31st birthday.
LHC increases by 2% for every year you don't join, up to a maximum of 70%, and can only be removed after 10 years of continuous hospital cover. This isn't just with Apia health insurance, but every health fund.
For more information, call us on 13 50 50 or visit the ATO website at www.ato.gov.au
Medicare Levy Surcharge
The Medicare levy surcharge (MLS) is levied on Australian taxpayers who do not have an appropriate level of private hospital cover and earn above a certain income.
The base income threshold (under which you are not liable to pay the MLS) is $93,000 for singles and $186,000 for families.
If your taxable income is above the MLS thresholds and you don't have an appropriate level of private hospital cover, you may have to pay the MLS.
Find more information, including how to calculate your income for MLS purposes, visit the ATO website at www.ato.gov.au

You will not need to use your private health insurance to cover the cost of the vaccine.
If you have any upcoming appointments with the dentist, physio or other health care providers, it’s important you contact them about your COVID-19 related questions. The good news is that the telehealth services we introduced as part of our COVID-19 support package in 2020 are here to stay.
To support the mental health of Health Insurance members, Apia Health Insurance has temporarily expanded cover for psychology to eligible members until 31 December 2022. For more information please call 13 50 50.

Pathology tests in an out-patient setting are covered by Medicare, and therefore aren’t covered by Apia Health Insurance. It’s best to check with Medicare to determine what tests are covered and whether you’ll experience any out of pocket costs.
To support members, coverage has been temporarily expanded for chest, lung, kidney or other treatment related to COVID-19 across all levels of Hospital cover at no additional cost until 30 September 2021. You'll just need to have served the standard two-month waiting period before requiring treatment. Along with other health insurers across Australia, any treatment for COVID-19 as an outpatient that is covered by Medicare will not be covered by Apia Health Insurance. To review your level of cover, log in to your My Account or call us on 13 50 50.
