Apia is warning customers affected by the recent storms and floods in NSW and Queensland to beware of scammers posing as insurers.
Apia spokesperson, Angela Wilkinson, said it was important people are very careful about what information they provide over the phone, particularly if offered handouts or collection of excesses in exchange for account details.
“In the aftermath of major weather events, scammers often attempt to take advantage of community members who have been affected,” Ms Wilkinson said.
“We want to assure our customers that we would never request banking or credit card details, as we would likely already have this on file.
“We strongly advise anyone who has received a call and suspects it might be a scam, not to provide personal details or respond,” she advised.
