Apia is warning customers to beware of phone scammers posing as Apia representatives.

The warning follows reports from customers and the public who have received unsolicited calls from people claiming to be from Apia and asking for personal information relating to potential compensation claims.

Apia spokesperson, Angela Wilkinson, said it was important people are very careful about what information they provide over the phone, particularly if offered potential compensation in exchange for personal details.

“The scammer starts by telling the customer they are calling about a claim they have had and the person is entitled to compensation. Bank or credit card details are requested to deposit money into their account.

“We’ve also become aware of another scam where a caller advises that the customer’s policy is overdue for payment. The scammer requests payment for an amount of $1000 or $1500 and asks for personal details. In many cases if the customer does not provide any details the scammer then becomes quite agitated and rude,” Ms Wilkinson said.   

“We strongly advise anyone who has received a call and suspects it might be a scam, not to provide personal details or respond,” she advised.

If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from Apia asking for bank details:

  1. If you believe you have received a suspicious call DO NOT provide any personal or banking details under any circumstances
  2. If you have caller ID, note down the number and contact Apia on 13 50 50 and report the incident; and
  3. Contact the Local Police.
