It’s hard to believe that 12 months have passed since Black Saturday. The bushfires last year caused much personal tragedy and devastation to many of our Apia customers.
A year on, Apia supported the Black Saturday anniversary event held in Marysville. Starting in the morning at Gallipoli Oval, around 900 people paid tribute to the lives that were lost.
Sadly, 173 people lost their lives in the devastating fires, and more than 2000 homes were destroyed. In commemoration, the names of those who had passed away were read out at the start of the first church service. Thanks was also given to all who had helped and continue to help, since the devastating fires.
Shelley Starrenburg, Apia Administration Coordinator, said it was a gratifying experience to be involved in the commemoration of Black Saturday.
“In the morning the air was sombre, with people paying their respects to those who had lost their lives.
“But as the service finished, the day turned to one of hope and faith for the future. It was great to be there and share in the spirit of the occasion and with Apia’s support, we were able to sponsor a range of fun activities for more than two hundred children who attended.”
At the service, many members of the community shared their experiences. Four local CFA captains also placed wreaths at the front of the stage and each received a standing ovation.
“The community spirit and courage at the anniversary was awe-inspiring. I’m proud to be working for a company that continues to support communities like Marysville, which have been so affected by Black Saturday,” said Shelley.
